In 2025, the 3Rs Collaborative is recruiting for a new treasurer, secretary, vice president, and up to 3 new general board members to join our team beginning in January of 2026. Board meetings are held virtually for 2 hours, 6 times a year and committee meetings are held in coordination with full board meetings.
Executive Team Application Information
For the treasurer, secretary, and vice president roles, priority will be given to individuals who have previously served on the 3RsC’s board of directors. The new Vice President will act as partner to the executive director (E.D.) and other board members, providing leadership and supporting the work of 3RsC’s Initiatives through good governance and strategic fundraising support. The Treasurer provides financial leadership to the organization. The Secretary ensures accurate record-keeping to preserve the historical memory and knowledge to the organization.
This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about the success of 3RsC to provide leadership above and beyond board service. The selected individuals in these roles should be experienced leaders in industry, academia, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector.
The 3RsC’s Presidential Line serves a cumulative six-year term with 2 years as Vice President, 2 years as President, and 2 years as Past President.
The 3RsC’s Treasurer and Secretary each serve a 3-year term.
Presidential Line Responsibilities are Focused on Good Leadership, Governance, Oversight, and Fundraising:
- Approving 3RsC’s annual budget, audit reports (if applicable), and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities
- Acting as an ambassador for the organization
- Regular participation in Executive Leadership meetings that occur every other week
- Planning, presiding over, and facilitating board and relevant committee meetings; partnering with the ED to ensure that board resolutions are carried out
- Being a trusted advisor to the ED as they develop and implement 3RsC’s strategic plan
- Ensuring 3RsC’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities 3RsC serves
- Personally treating 3RsC as a top philanthropic priority reflected in an annual financial gift
- In collaboration with the ED, generating substantial annual revenue and fostering 3RsC’s overall financial health
- Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major individual donors, corporate, and/or foundation gifts
- As Vice President: Coordinating an annual performance evaluation of the ED
- As President: (1) Developing, managing, and stewarding relationships with funders, partners, and other stakeholders & (2) Reviewing outcomes and metrics created by 3RsC for evaluating its impact, and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness using those metrics
- As Past President: (1) Periodically consulting with board members on their roles and helping them assess their performance & (2) Assisting the ED and Nominating Committee (if applicable) in recruiting board members
- As Past President, in collaboration with the treasurer, executive leadership, ensuring that 100% of 3RsC’s board members make an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity
Presidential Line Qualifications:
- Prior membership on the 3RsC’s board of directors or significant contribution to initiatives (preferred)
- Extensive professional experience with significant executive leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector
- Demonstrated success as a nonprofit board member or board chair
- Track record of building credibility in the funding community that has resulted in major gifts to a nonprofit
- A commitment to and understanding of 3RsC’s beneficiaries and mission preferably based on experience
- Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals
- Excellent written and oral communication skills coupled with natural affinity for public speaking
- Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of 3RsC’s beneficiaries
Treasurer Responsibilities:
- Serving as chair of the finance committee.
- With the finance committee, manage the board’s review of and actions related to their financial responsibilities such as annual tax filing and development, review, and following of financial policies and procedures.
- With the finance committee and board of directors, ensure sound management of finances.
- Work with the executive director to ensure that appropriate financial reports are available to the board on a timely basis.
- Present a treasury update to the board at each board meeting.
- Present the annual budget to the board for approval.
- If applicable, review the annual audit.
- Review and sign annual tax documentation.
- Mentor the incoming treasurer during the first year of their term
Secretary Responsibilities:
- Take minutes during the board meeting including noting attendance, votes, and key action items.
- Ensure the safety and accuracy of all records of board meetings.
- Assume responsibilities of the president if the vice president, president, and past president are all absent.
- Ensuring that the organizational bylaws are followed at board meetings.
- Leading any reviews of the organizational bylaws, as needed.
- Mentor the incoming secretary during the first year of their term
Treasurer & Secretary Qualifications:
- Prior membership on the 3RsC’s board of directors or significant contribution to initiatives (preferred)
- Commitment to the 3RsC’s mission, values, and goals.
- Relevant scientific skills, expertise, education, and experience. If possible, evidenced with an excellent track record of conducting high-quality research.
- A good understanding of the use of animals in research and a commitment to the development of all 3Rs.
- An understanding of the priorities, challenges, and opportunities for the 3Rs across the biosciences sector.
- Ability to exercise judgment across a broad range of policy, strategic, and research issues.
- A strong strategic perspective and ability to tackle issues outside of their immediate area of expertise.
- Understanding of and willingness to fulfill fiduciary responsibilities.
- Interpersonal and communication skills.
- Availability and commitment to attending executive team and board meetings.
